Getting Around Niikappu Without a Car | On-Demand Bus, Local Bus and Walking

Niikappu is convenient to explore by car, but it can also be visited by combining public transportation. Unlike a large city, you may not always be able to choose another service after arrival, so work backward from the return trip and reservation conditions.

SECTIONCheck the Return Time and Last Mile First

If you plan only around the outbound service, you may be unable to return to your lodging after sightseeing or make your return bus connection. First confirm the service leaving Niikappu, how you will get from your lodging back to the bus stop, and the reservation reception hours.

The current BASE NIIKAPPU access guide gives an estimated walk of about 10 minutes from the “Takae” stop on Donan Bus's Tomakomai–Shizunai route. Travel time varies with walking speed, luggage, snow and darkness, so confirm the latest route before arrival.

SECTIONAI On-Demand Bus “Melody-go” Basics

Niikappu Town's AI On-Demand Bus began full-scale operation on May 1, 2026. It is not a bus that continuously follows a fixed route; it is a shared transportation service in which AI determines vehicle assignment and routing in response to reservations.

SECTIONCheck Connections with Donan Bus

The estimated walk from Takae bus stop is shown on the current access page. However, the publicly available boarding-point list issued April 24, 2026 does not show the facility name BASE NIIKAPPU, so before booking, confirm with Niikappu Town and the facility which boarding point to use for the AI On-Demand Bus and whether boarding/alighting directly in front of the facility is possible. If arriving by public transportation, it is easier to confirm arrangements when you provide your service, arrival time, number of travelers and luggage in advance.

  • Whether the service you plan to board requires a reservation

  • Whether operation differs on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays or holidays

  • Whether you may be confusing inbound and outbound stops with the same name

  • Whether there is enough connection time to the AI On-Demand Bus

  • Whether there is enough margin for the final return connection

SECTIONDo Not Judge Walking Only by Distance

Even with an estimated 10-minute walk, the burden changes with large luggage, rain, snow, strong wind or darkness. Check same-day conditions for sidewalks, road surfaces, street lighting and snow clearing, and consider another transportation method if walking would be difficult.
