Free and Low-Cost Sightseeing in Niikappu | Budget-Friendly Places and Costs

Niikappu has several facilities that can be used free of charge, including Yushun Tower, Re・Cord Plaza, the Local History Museum, Yushun Memorial Hall and park golf. But “free admission” is not the same as a free trip. Separate transport, meals, seasonal operation and paid services, and choose a small number of facilities to build a meaningful low-cost stay.

SECTIONSeparate admission fees from total cost when planning free or low-budget sightseeing.

When keeping costs down, calculate facility admission, paid services inside facilities, transport, food and lodging separately. Even if Yushun Tower or the Local History Museum is free, fuel, buses or taxis, meals, shopping and accommodation still cost money. If parking is listed but no price is stated, do not assume it is free.

Instead of asking how many free places you can visit, choose two or three nearby places and add one paid experience. This often reduces wasted fuel and time.

Make two budgets: per person and for the whole group. Admission often scales with headcount, while fuel, parking and room charges do not always increase linearly, so separate fixed costs from per-person costs.

Use three columns in the budget: confirmed amount, maximum amount and unconfirmed. Enter ¥0 only for facilities confirmed as free; use a ceiling for variable items such as transport and parking, and leave unknown items marked unconfirmed instead of treating them as ¥0.

“Free” does not mean the same season, weekday, hours or service scope. Match each facility to the travel date so you do not plan seasonal facilities in winter or the Local History Museum on a closed day.

Even if you list free facilities, you cannot visit them on the same day when their open days do not overlap. Do not rank only by price; add travel date, direction, companion interests and an indoor/outdoor balance.

SECTIONCombine Yushun Tower and Re・Cord Plaza.

At Re・Cord Museum, Yushun Tower and Re・Cord Plaza are free areas. You can view the town from the observation room, then search for music and listen to designated records in the plaza, combining scenery and music culture in one facility.

Check A38 for Yushun Tower conditions and A41 for free and paid listening options. The museum visitor course, listening booth, jukebox and cafe are outside the free scope.

A town-center combination can reduce travel costs compared with driving back and forth to outlying areas. The tower and the plaza offer different experiences, so a free itinerary need not feel repetitive.

SECTIONExplore history and culture at the Local History Museum.

The Local History Museum is free and presents Niikappu nature, archaeology, everyday life, Ainu culture and horse-related local materials. In 2026, updated wild-bird displays and a quiz for children are also announced.

Because it is closed on Sundays, Mondays, holidays and other specified days, do not add it to the plan based only on the free price. See A39 for exhibits and visiting with children.

Do not rush through the museum just because it is free. Choose one area of interest. If you use a children’s quiz or explanation program, confirm availability and budget separately for optional books or printed materials.

SECTIONUse park golf with free club rental.

Nishihakutsu Hills Park has free use and free club rental in 2026. It can suit travelers without equipment, but it operates seasonally from April 15 to November 15, with hours varying by month. Bear activity or severe weather may also cause closure.

Do not guarantee the number or sizes of free rental clubs. Sign the user register and follow on-site rules. See A40 for current-year details.

Even with free park golf, you may need a hat, drinks, insect repellent or spare shoes. Using items you already own instead of assuming you will buy disposable supplies on site keeps costs lower.

SECTIONVisit Yushun Memorial Park and Yushun Memorial Hall.

Yushun Memorial Park is an outdoor memorial area, while Yushun Memorial Hall is a seasonal exhibition facility. In 2026 the hall is free, but operates March 28 to November 8, 10:00–16:00, and is closed Thursdays.

Keep offerings to a minimum and visit only memorial monuments officially open to visitors. Yushun Stallion Station is not freely accessible; if an official guided-tour program is separately announced, use only that procedure and follow its current rules. See A37 for facility details.

At famous-horse sites, do not rush through multiple places simply because they are free. Allow quiet time for memorials and exhibits, and include the fuel and travel time needed to reach outlying areas.

SECTIONAdd only one paid experience.

One paid experience that strongly matches your interests can give the trip a focus without increasing travel. At Re・Cord Museum, examples include the visitor course from ¥300 for adults, the listening booth at ¥400 per hour and the jukebox at ¥100 per song. A 2026 record concert example is ¥300.

Event prices vary by year and performance and are separate from normal services. Rather than stacking several paid experiences, choose the one you care about most.

Choose a paid experience by purpose, not only by the lowest price. Someone interested in audio equipment may be more satisfied spending on the visitor course or listening booth than stopping after one jukebox song.

SECTIONBuild the budget including transport, meals and seasonal operation.

Besides facility fees, include fuel or public transport, possible parking fees, lunch, drinks, lodging, bathing and contingency money. A long detour to a free facility can cost more in travel time and transport than the admission you saved.

  • Facility and service fees

  • Round-trip fuel, bus or taxi

  • Parking cost confirmation when price is unclear

  • Food, drinks and shopping

  • Alternative costs when a seasonal facility is unavailable

  • Contingency for sudden weather or closures

Do not treat seasonal Yushun Memorial Hall and park golf, Re・Cord Museum with its annual calendar, and the weekday-closed Local History Museum as if they had the same operating pattern.

If you want to save on food, searching only for a cheap restaurant without checking hours can increase travel. Use the lunch, dinner and takeout guides to choose a practical option near the day’s attractions.

SECTIONUse different plans for a half day, full day or multi-night stay.

DATA / CHECKScroll horizontally to view →
StayExample structure
Half dayYushun Tower + Re・Cord Plaza in town; add one paid experience if desired
Full dayTown center + Local History Museum when open, or the Asahi-area memorial hall
Multiple nightsSeparate a free culture-facility day from a hot-spring, meal or paid-experience day

Even on a low-budget trip, packing in too many facilities increases travel burden. With an overnight stay, split the plan across two days based on open days and meal times instead of rushing through free attractions from early morning.

On a multi-night stay, do not force all free facilities into day one. Swap days according to weather and closures. Using the lodging as a base, carrying less and avoiding repeated drives on the same roads saves both money and energy.

Reducing the schedule is also a form of saving. Include the option to rest at the lodging or in town instead of adding more travel when you are tired or the weather worsens.

SECTIONRecheck free conditions and prices before departure.

  • Exactly which facility/service is free

  • Current-year prices and age categories

  • Seasonal dates, weekday closures and temporary closures

  • Availability of rental clubs, equipment and events

  • Separate costs such as parking, transport and meals

  • Latest official website, social-media or phone information

The specific prices and operating conditions in this article were checked on August 5, 2026. For a later year, do not carry forward the previous year’s free conditions; recheck each facility’s primary information. If parking or rental conditions are unknown, do not assume “probably free.”

Record the date each price was checked in the itinerary sheet and recheck older information. Marking items “confirmed” and “needs confirmation” in the shared budget also reduces unexpected expenses on the day.

Keep a small contingency amount in case prices have changed. If a free condition has ended, do not automatically abandon the trip; reprioritize within the budget and choose one experience.

If you cannot confirm that a facility is free, leave open the possibility of a charge in the budget. Before departure, review all fees and operating conditions and update the plan to a realistic total including contingency money.
